On this 1.5 hour tour, we will cruise through the refuge searching for black bears, turkeys, owls, birds, alligators, deer and other native wildlife of the area. Your tour guide will seek out the nooks and crannies where these animals congregate and also talk about the flora and fauna of the tour.

Physical Education Field Trips

Looking for a way to spice up the PE Department at your school? Come and paddle some of our tour areas with guided kayak instructors.

PE was never this much fun while learning something new. All of our kayak tours begin with paddling instruction, boat steering techniques, safety protocols and a description of the tour area and route. Then we hop in the boats and practice our strokes, turning, breaking and paddling backwards. Now we are ready to venture off onto the tour and observe the natural beauty of the Outer Banks and coastal North Carolina. The guide will talk about local flora and fauna, coastal ecology, local history and offer kayaking tips throughout the tour. We will do all we can to make sure everyone is comfortable and having a good time while getting some good exercise in the outdoors.

*Educators and chaperones go for free for a three hour tour and lab. Includes paddling instruction, safety talk and closure activity.

Kayak Camping Trips

Overnight Kayak Camping Trips are an incredible experience for those who love to paddle and are interested in a wilderness experience in Coastal North Carolina.

We offer overnight expeditions in several areas along the Roanoke, Cashie, Chowan Rivers and their tributaries, and the Albemarle Sound on platforms only accessible by kayak! These areas traverse great natural preserves of the Palmetto Preserve and the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge and other watersheds of the Albemarle Sound. Observe bald eagles, owls, white-tailed deer, black bear and the serenity of coastal North Carolina.

One of the hidden gems of the North Carolina State Park system is Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates County. Described as “an enchanted forest, with primitive species of fish relatively unchanged over millions of years, towering bald cypress trees with massive trunks, luxuriant growths of Spanish moss. Here, coastal pond and southern swamp forest mingle, creating one of North Carolina’s rarest ecological communities. Together with upland forests, these environments create a haven for wildlife and humanity alike.” It is a paddlers’ paradise and one of the most unique camping locals in North Carolina.

Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School offers guided overnight camping excursions to this majestic paddling mecca. We will paddle to our campsite, set up camp and begin to unwind in the natural beauty of the place. Explore the pond by kayak, hike the trails through the forest, paddle up Bennets Creek, the source of the pond, and camp along the shores. This is also a great place for family camping trips, couples and first time kayakers as the environment is very sheltered from the elements.

You can choose from several tasty menu options to suit all appetites; you never knew camping out could taste this good!
*Discounts available for multi-day expeditions and large groups.

We have been shred-ucating visitors and locals alike of the Outer Banks since 2004 so come on in and shred off in one of our Outer Banks Surf Lessons!! A typical Outer Banks Surf Lessonย ย lasts 1.5 โ€“ 2 hours and begins with a safety talk and learning the anatomy of a surfboard. Next paddling techniques, balance and feet positioning are discussed. Participants then practice popping up onto the surfboard on the beach before getting wet.

Our instructors are there to help you catch waves and answer any questions you might have about surfing, the ocean, waves, or surf culture. They shred before or after the lesson so you will spend more time catching waves instead of watching them shred. The OBX has some of the best surf conditions for beginner surf lessons on the East Coast so come on out and shred wih us!!
